Teaching Artist with Writing and Animation Background (Juvenile Detention Facility Youth) (Sylmar, CA & Downey, CA)

Job Summary:

Our youth enrichment client with a mission to bridge the gap of the youth and families significantly impacted by incarceration through the arts is seeking a Teaching Artist with Writing and Animation Background. Their mission is to create opportunities for growth, education, and positive experiences that empower these individuals to thrive. The individuals they serve come from an array of backgrounds, most notably black and latinx and offer programs primarily to inner-city youth and youth in Juvenile Facilities.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Co-direct Secure Track Youth (ages 18 - 24) students at two locations to create 4 short films (2 per each site)
  • Teach 4 - 5 classes per week for 15 weeks
  • Develop and create engaging lesson plans with provided theme
  • Gather attendance and participation data
  • Attend virtual bi-weekly and monthly team meetings
  • Conduct acting games and writing prompts to creatively engage students
  • Deliver education and community engagement programs
  • Collaborate effectively and professionally with team members
  • Available for the Culminating Screening Event (December 2024)

Qualifications:

  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to and from school sites and organizations in Sylmar, CA and Downey, CA
  • Minimum 2 years of Teaching Artist experience
  • At least 5 years’ experience as a professional artist: playwright, animator, filmmaker, actor, and/or director
  • Has taught in a school or prison setting and is sensitive to such cultures
  • Experience with teaching in Juvenile Facilities is a strong plus
  • Is an authoritative and grounded leader who can manage in a structured environment
  • Passionate about empowering learners of all ages as creators and critical thinkers
  • Has strong verbal and written communication skills; can guide in-depth discussions; is open to feedback
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) desired
  • Scriptwriting/creative writing experience in short film format strongly desired
  • Filmmaking skills desired
  • Social justice knowledge and background desired
  • Well-organized and has great creative instincts
  • Passionate about social justice, prison reform, and education reform

Position Status: Part-time, 4 - 5 days a week for 2-3 hour days with some weekend availability
